Class of 2008 Leaves Centennial High Something to Be Remembered By
A contingent of seniors gathered on Saturday, April 5, to spruce up the school’s Senior Quad

A total of 40 students from Centennial High School’s Class of 2008 chose to spend a Saturday with rakes and hoes in hand to leave a mark on the school from which they will graduate in a matter of weeks.

It may have been a work session, but the seniors who participated April 5 had a great time and felt a surge of pride at the end of the day when they surveyed what they had done.

“This was really fun for me,” said D’Auria Barker. “It felt good to do something positive to make our school more beautiful,” she told The Bulletin. “I hope that this becomes a tradition for years to come.”

Many of the students were members of the Senior Cabinet, according to Cynthia Lipkins, who teaches nursing and health careers at the school. “But anyone else who wanted to were invited to participate. They cleaned the Senior Quad, which is right in the front of the campus. They did a fantastic job.”

The students cleaned the area, painted trash cans and planters, pulled weeds and planted flowers as part of the Senior Annual Beautification Day.

Jeffrey Neal of the Class of 2008 said, “I was glad to be a part of making our school beautiful. It’s amazing what a little effort and a few people working together can accomplish.”

Anthony Hicklen, who wears number 55 on the football team, said, “It’s a wonderful feeling to do something like this. It’s almost like making a touchdown. I’m really glad I came to help. Doing a cleanup gives you a chance to see the results of your work. Everything looks so much better.”

“The senior class just decided on their own to do this,” said Lipkins. “They just wanted to leave something positive at the school to mark their time here. It’s a great idea and I’m proud of them for thinking of it and for following through on it.”

“This was a great opportunity to make our school look like it should,” said Derrick Manning, who perhaps summed up the moment best at the end of the day.

“Doesn’t that look great?” he said with more than a little touch of pride in the students ’ handiwork.
