Bill ensuring funding for new MLK hospital passes state legislature

SACRAMENTO—A bill co-sponsored by Assembly Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles, and Assistant Speaker Pro Tempore Isadore Hall III that would provide funding for the operation of the new Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital Medical Center was approved by the state legislature last week.

The agreement ensures Medi-Cal funding for the new private nonprofit MLK Hospital Medical Center. The hospital, under the bill, would be reimbursed for inpatient services at 60 percent of cost.

“Since the closure of Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital, families in South Los Angeles have been in need of a new facility to serve the community,” Bass said. “This bill will provide the new facility with adequate and predictable Medi-Cal funding to ensure MLK’s financial viability while providing badly needed services.”

The bill also writes into law the partnership between the UC, the county and the governor. The trio will facilitate a private enterprise to open the new hospital.

Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who has led the county’s efforts to resurrect the hospital, hailed the bill’s passage as another significant step in the effort to open the new hospital.

“With passage of AB 2599, I am pleased that the legislature has codified the state’s commitment to the University of California and the County of Los Angeles to provide financial support for the hospital,” Ridley-Thomas said. “Passage of AB 2599 continues the momentum toward restoring in-patient services to underserved residents in the Watts-Willowbrook area by the new MLK Hospital.” ...
