Deputies
Involved in Two Shootings Blocks Apart
From
staff reports
Sheriff’s
deputies were involved in two separate shootings near the Compton-Lynwood
border on Saturday, Aug. 9, authorities said.
The first shooting took place after deputies headed to the 500 block
of East El Segundo Boulevard at Santa Fe Avenue in Lynwood at approximately
9:15 p.m. to disperse a group of suspected gang members who were loitering
and believed to be selling drugs, authorities said.
When that group scattered, a deputy chased two men, who hopped a
fence, in his patrol car. Moments later, shots were fired at the deputy
after he spotted the men and exited the car. The deputy returned fire,
hitting one of the suspects in the neck, said Deputy Byron Ward of the
Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.
The suspect was treated at an area hospital and taken into custody.
The second suspect fled and was apprehended hours later. He was found
to have in his possession a holding clip matching a handgun found at the
shooting scene, authorities said.
During the search for the second suspect, a deputy opened fire on
a car that he said was moving toward him in a threatening manner. The driver,
who wasn’t hit, was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly
weapon on a peace officer, authorities said.
That incident took place at about 1:10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10 just
west of Santa Fe in Compton. A department spokesman said the two shootings
were not directly related.
The men arrested in connection with the first shooting were also
charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. Their bail
was set at $100,000 each.
The department ’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating both incidents.
