Seminars, Workshops Help Businesses Get Prepared
National Preparedness Month sparks city’s move to ensure the business community is ready for a disaster

From staff reports

The Planning and Economic Development Department (Business Services Division) and the Compton Fire Department are sponsoring a series of seminars and workshops to provide disaster preparedness information and resources to local businesses. Both the Compton Chamber of Commerce and the Compton Latino Chamber of Commerce will help host the seminars.

The sessions were commenced with the “Disaster Preparedness” Information Panel, Sept. 4, which featured leaders in the field with expert advice and information. (The panel closed with a Q&A session.)

Workshops will be held tomorrow, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. and again Sept. 18 at 8 a.m. at the Compton Work Source Center. At these sessions, attendees will be taught disaster planning and recovery processes that can be designed specifically for their company. The center is located at 700 N. Bullis Rd.

The keynote speaker, also an expert in the area of Disaster and Emergency Preparedness, will close out the series on Sept. 25 at 7:30 a.m. at the Business2Business Networking Session hosted by Councilman Isadore Hall at the Crystal Casino and Hotel, 123 E. Artesia Blvd. in Compton.

The information panel, keynote speaker and workshop instructor will answer questions and address concerns and issues such as:

• How do I prepare for the “Big One?” • What is at risk? • Protecting your building and its contents • Developing your business continuity plan.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has designated September as National Preparedness Month across America. National Preparedness Month focuses on family emergency preparedness and encourages Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools. Therefore, the city of Compton has joined in by offering these workshops and seminars to help prepare our businesses for the Big One (earthquake) and other disasters such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and wildfires and more common events such as building fires. Businesses will be given a valuable tool to help protect their company, employees and customers from disaster loss.

Admission to the seminars and workshops is free and includes refreshments. Each business in attendance will also receive a “Disaster Protection and Recovery Planning Toolkit.”
