Emergency Preparedness/Disaster Drill Slated for Next Month

From staff reports

The city of Compton and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health will be sponsoring a Com-munity Emergency Prepar-edness Workshop at the Crystal Hotel and Casino on Tuesday July 8. The event is designed to help community and faith-based organizations prepare for unexpected disasters and remain functional during the recovery stage.

Jon Thompson, acting fire chief of the Compton Fire Department, stresses that it is crucial for local organizations to be prepared and have a disaster/continuity plan in place.

“Community-oriented organizations are a valuable asset in helping people prepare for and respond to various emergencies,” he said. “Indeed, Hurricane Katrina demonstrated that save family and friends, community and faith-based organizations are where people turn to in times of need. “

The workshop keynote speaker will be a Hurricane Katrina responder/community leader from Louisiana, who will address best practices and lessons learned from their community’s response to the storm and its aftermath.

The Crystal Hotel and Casino is located at 123 E. Artesia Blvd. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the program will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. This event is free for community partners and parking is provided. To register, visit www.acteva.com/go/uriah or call toll free: (866) 714-3028, or e-mail kgardner@uriahgroup.com.
