Villaraigosa, Magic Johnson Announce 10,000th Job Filled, Urge Participation in HIRE LA’s Youth Program
Key milestone reached in program sponsored by the city of Los Angeles, Workforce Investment Board and L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce

From staff reports

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa last week announced the fulfillment of the 10,000th job through this year’s HIRE LA’s Youth program and set a new goal of 15,000 jobs for the coming year.

Earvin “Magic” Johnson joined Villaraigosa to urge youth and employers to participate in the program, which connects youth ages 16 – 24 with local employers for paid full- and part-time jobs. The HIRE LA’s Youth program – sponsored by the city of Los Angeles, the Workforce Investment Board and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce – was created to provide summer work experience for young adults and help fill entry-level job openings with Los Angeles employers.

“With so many young people in Los Angeles who are out of school and out of work, HIRE LA’s Youth is an extremely important program aimed at giving young people the opportunity to join the workforce and maximize their potential,” said Villaraigosa. “I congratulate our city’s businesses for offering our youth the opportunity to build their careers and become the future leaders of tomorrow.”

Achieving last year’s program goal, the 10,000th job was filled by Vons, one of the business partners participating in the program. Building off this success, UPS pledged to fill the first of 15,000 new jobs, the new goal of the program. A key component of HIRE LA’s Youth is Work Readiness Certification, which provides youth with a portable credential certifying that they possess the basic skills necessary to obtain and retain employment. The Work Readiness Certificate is endorsed by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the City Workforce Investment Board and the Professionals in Human Resources Association.

“One of the biggest challenges facing employers in Los Angeles is hiring qualified entry-level workers,” said Gary Toebben, president & CEO, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. “By creating a work-ready pool of applicants for participating businesses to select from, HIRE LA’s Youth addresses this challenge and helps strengthen L.A.’s workforce and economy.”

“By providing our youth with job readiness training, HIRE LA’s Youth not only gives young people in Los Angeles employment opportunities they may not have had, but it also gives them a sense of confidence as they enter the workforce that they can succeed,” said Charlie Woo, president, Workforce Investment Board.

HIRE LA’s Youth thanks its sponsors AT&T, Vons and Southern California Edison for their continuous support and involvement that help make the program possible.
