Compton Students Practice to Make Perfect on Job Interviews

From staff reports

Compton Unified School District (CUSD) trained more than 150 students for job success at the 5th Annual Student Portfolio Workshop held Friday, April 18 at El Camino College Compton Center.

Students from 17 CUSD elementary and middle schools had the opportunity to discuss their career plans and “sell” their qualifications during one-on-one interviews and career building sessions with working professionals. Students had to research specific careers and participate in mock interviews and “Dress for Success” workshops prior to attending Portfolio Day.

“We wanted to motivate our students and help them to explore the world of careers and professions that lie beyond the walls of their classrooms,” said Deloris Davis Holmes, CUSD associate superintendent. “This workshop provided our students with an opportunity to experience the interview process. Our objective was to have our students interact with members of our community, who have already attained their career goals and who can serve as resources and role models.”

Students arrived in their best interview outfits, carrying their portfolios, which included their autobiographies, cover letters, resumes, job applications and two of their best academic assignments. Guest interviewers reviewed student portfolios and then participated in Q-and-A sessions. Interviewers also evaluated each student based on oral presentation, quality of work and career objectives. After the sessions, students and interviewers provided feedback.

The 24 guest interviewers represented a variety of industries, such as entertainment, nonprofit, education, finance and music. Among the interviewers were movie producers, business directors, educators, musicians, a financial analyst and a police officer.

The event is one of several offered through the Career Exploration program, which is designed to expose elementary and middle school students to a range of careers.
