Board Considers Fourth Audit of District Operations
CUSD: Move
will provide overall organizational and management review of the educational
program

In
a move to ascertain operational and organizational areas that need
improvement, the school board last night was expected to approve a
fourth audit of district operations at the request of the new superintendent.
Compton Unified will pay MGT of America Inc. no more than $50,000 to
analyze curriculum and instruction practices. The funds will come out
of the School Library Improvement Block Grant program budget.
Last month, the school board supported three other similar audits at
a total cost of $46,000 in the areas of human resources and personnel
services, legal services and fiscal services, the latter of which will
include an in-depth look at facilities funding and the affect it has
on the district’s overall financial status.
Consultant Richard Werlin is being paid $6,600 to audit the human resources
and personnel services department. The Los Angeles-based law firm of
Fagen, Friedman & Fulfrost is studying the district’s legal
services at a cost of $9,600. And School Services of California Inc.
is auditing both facilities and fiscal services for $30,000.
Superintended Kaye Burnside Ed.D., who officially took the helm of
Compton Unified March 1, is exercising an “administrative best
practice,” according to district Communications Director Christine
Sanchez.
The board is also scheduled to sometime this month conduct a study
session to prioritize facility improvement projects, many of which
were put on hold last year by former Superintendent Jesse L. Gonzales
after the projection of a multi-million dollar facilities modernization
program deficit and claims of money mismanagement highlighted within
independent forensic audits.
