Compton Education Foundation Hosts Center Stage 2008
Awards ceremony to showcase some of the school district's talented youth

From staff reports

On Friday, April 25 at 6:30 pm, the Compton Education Foundation will host Center Stage 2008 at the Carson Community Center.

This event’s purpose is to showcase the talents of some of the Compton Unified School District’s students and honor the corporate sponsors, community partners, and district staff members who have made the greatest impact on implementing the foundation’s goal this year.

This year’s honorees include the Target Corporation, the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, Dramatic Results and Mr. Cleveland Palmer. This formal dinner will also include performances by the Compton High School Jazz Ensemble and Ronnie Laws, world renowned jazz artist.

The Compton Education Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation established in 2003 to raise funds for all 39 Compton public schools serving approximately 31,000 students. The foundation’s focus was and is restoring the visual and performing Arts (VAPA) in the schools.  Its goal is to assist the Compton Unified School District in providing comprehensive arts instruction throughout the entire district.

Under the administrative leadership of Executive Director Tami Foy, the foundation is well on its way to making that goal a reality. In 2003, she was able to help the district secure $100,000 each from The Game, a Compton High School graduate, and 50 Cent. As a result of those gifts, CEF was able to award over $13,000 to the Music Department of Centennial High School in 2007.
