L.A. Urban League Appoints Chief Neighborhood Officer for Neighborhoods@Work Initiative
Pamela Bakewell-Griggs to lead Crenshaw program

From staff reports

The Los Angeles Urban League recently announced the appointment of Pamela Bakewell-Griggs to the post of Chief Neighborhood Officer (CNO) beginning April 1.

In her new position, Bakewell-Griggs will be responsible for overseeing the league’s Neighborhood Initiatives Office and executing the Neighborhoods@Work program.

Launched in December 2007, the Neighborhoods@Work initiative is a five-year plan designed to revitalize the South Los Angeles area one neighborhood at a time. The strategic plan focuses on five key areas of improvement: education, employment, health, housing and safety. The first neighborhood to be transformed by the initiative is the 70-block Park Mesa Heights area surrounding Crenshaw High School. In the future, the League envisions the plan will serve as a model for initiating change in other urban neighborhoods across the region.

“Pamela has served as an active and integral member of our community for many years,” said Blair Taylor, president and CEO, L.A. Urban League. “Now, she will join the L.A. Urban League as a force for change. With her help, we plan to take our Neighborhoods@Work initiative to the next level to continue the League’s pattern of bringing positive change to the community.”

The L.A. Urban League is partnering with a variety of government, corporate and community organizations, including the Mayor’s Office, the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Los Angeles Police Department, the City Attorney’s Office, the University of Southern California, Park Mesa Heights community groups and many other private and public partners.

Prior to her position with the L.A. Urban League, Bakewell-Griggs held various executive positions at The Bakewell Company, a real estate company, and at The Brotherhood Crusade, a philanthropic institution dedicated to raising and distributing funds to L.A. County non-profit organizations.

Bakewell-Griggs is replacing Interim Chief Neighborhood Officer Anthony Maddox, who will be moving into the League’s chief of staff position.
