Godwin Awarded Prestigious Clerk Designation

By Bulletin Staff Writer

Alita Godwin, city clerk of the city of Compton, has been awarded the prestigious designation of “Certified Municipal Clerk,” (CMC) from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) for achieving its high educational, experience and service requirements.

Godwin joins 363 municipal clerks from the state of California who currently hold the designation.

The unique Certified Municipal Clerk program of the IIMC was launched in 1970. The program aids municipal clerks and deputy clerks in improving job performance and recognizes the professionalization of the municipal clerk’s office. Completion of an IIMC approved program or a degree in public administration or related field, responsible experience in local government and participation in conferences, meetings and educational seminars are required to earn this certification.

IIMC’s primary goal is to actively promote the continuing education and professional development of municipal clerks through extensive education programs, certification, publications, networking, annual conferences and research. As an educational catalyst, IIMC inspires clerks to expand and advance beyond their present levels of development.

IIMC also engages in municipal research administration, enhances critical professional skill development and fosters a spirit of mutual assistance and good fellowship among municipal clerks around the globe.

According to Godwin, she will take her education pursuits even higher.

“This has encouraged me to seek my master’s degree,” she said. This, she said, will allow her to “tutor and mentor” other clerks and colleagues.
