Burke
Honored During Final Board of Supervisors Meeting
LOS
ANGELES—Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke was showered
with plaudits and gifts at her final Board of Supervisors meeting last
Tuesday, marking the end of her 16-year tenure as representative of
the 2nd District on the five-member board.
Burke, 76, was serenaded by the USC marching band, which paraded
into the meeting playing “Fight On!,” “Tusk” and “Conquest.”
Each of her fellow supervisors and several members of the county
staff then took turns extolling her achievements, presenting her with flowers
and a scroll of recognition.
“She has been one of the individuals who truly inspired me, and many
others,” said Supervisor Gloria Molina. “I don’t think
that there would have been even today a President-elect Barack Obama
had it not been for an Yvonne Burke who was paving the way for that kind
of
greatness.”
Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky described Burke as a “peacemaker” who
brought people and different points of view together.
Yaroslavsky also announced that the board had established a $50,000
scholarship at Cal State Dominguez Hills in her honor. The school is located
in Burke’s district, which includes portions of South Los Angeles
as well as Inglewood, Culver City and Compton.
Roughly half of Burke’s staff has been asked to stay on for the next
90 days to help with the transition of her successor, state Sen.
Mark Ridley-Thomas, D-Los An-geles, said Burke spokesman James Bolden,
who is among those remaining temporarily. Burke supported Los Angeles Councilman
Bernard Parks against Ridley-Thomas in the recent election.
Burke’s final days in office have been marked by proposals to name
various county facilities in her honor.
At today’s meeting, the baseball field at Kenneth Hahn State Recreational
Area was renamed the Yvonne B. Burke Sports Complex, and the Ladera Park
Community Center was recast as the Yvonne B. Burke Senior and Community
Center.
Last week, the board approved the renaming of Admiralty Park in Marina
del Rey to the Yvonne B. Burke Park.
