Congresswoman Waters Joins Community Tour of King/Drew Medical Center

From staff reports

Last Tuesday Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a group of concerned community members and the Save King-Drew Coalition toured the Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital as part of the ongoing effort to encourage the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to make the Medical Center a priority in the day-to-day operation of the county’s business.

This past summer, the Board of Supervisors approved a structural improvement plan in the amount of $32 million for the hospital. The tour allowed participants to look at the progress being made in regard to those recently approved improvements.

“Our request of the supervisors has not changed,” said Waters. “If there are problems, fix it. The community has the right to expect nothing less and we remain committed to making sure that there is accountability in the decisions and changes made in delivering health services to the residents of L.A. County; the majority of which live within the 35th Congressional District.”

The community, organized under the Save-King Drew Coalition, has toiled diligently for the past three years in support of positive efforts to turn the hospital around, and have held regular community meetings to gain input from and to hear the concerns of the community. The coalition’s goal is to improve King/Drew as a comprehensive medical center and to prevent it from becoming privatized.

Some of the organizations represented in the Save King-Drew Coalition are: NAACP — L.A, SCLC, Rainbow/PUSH, Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC), Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Association, League of United Latin American Citizens, Watts Chamber of Commerce, Watts Neighborhood Council, Black Community Health Task Force, Association of Black Social Workers of Greater L.A, Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Hays Tabernacle C.M.E. Church, Brother To Brother, Paul Robeson Community Center, Black Women Rising Inc. and the Black Women’s Forum.
