Over
1,200 Families Benefit From 34th Annual Food Distribution
Deserving families
receive a full bag of groceries and a $75 gift certificate
From
staff reports
LOS
ANGELES — Despite a slow start in its goal to better last year’s
efforts, the Nix Check Cashing Community Outreach Foundation (NCCCOF),
in collaboration with long-time corporate sponsors and volunteers,
met its goal to brighten the holidays for some 1,200-plus deserving
local families at the company’s 34th Annual Thanksgiving food
distribution at Athens Park.
Each family received a full bag of groceries and a $75 gift certificate
redeemable at Ralphs/Food 4 Less. As the company has done every year, Mahatma
Rice donated one-pound bags of rice and Mrs. Cubbison’s Food Inc.
donated boxes of stuffin’ mix.
Also on hand were representatives of the event’s newest community
partner, Kinecta Federal Credit Union, which recently acquired Nix Check
Cashing’s parent company, Navicert Financial Inc., in an effort to
extend affordable and necessary financial services to its customers. Kinecta
President/CEO Simone Lagomarsino told the audience that the two plan to
improve services by educating Nix customers unfamiliar with traditional
banking.
This year’s effort begin in October, when as many as 55 locations
began collecting money and canned goods and called on the corporate community
to help feed the families. Tom Nix, president of Nix Check Cashing and
senior vice president of Kinecta Alternative Financial Solutions, announced
that this year’s in-store collection efforts resulted in $83,000
in donations.
Watts Community Activist “Sweet” Alice Harris and V-100 FM “It’s
A New Day” host Daniella Masterson delivered inspirational messages
of hope to the families. They were joined by 100-plus volunteers from sponsors
including Nix Check Cashing, Kinecta, MoneyGram and the L.A. County Department
of Parks and Recreation.
Each year, the NCCCOF works directly with a diverse list of 35 community-based
non-profit organizations and churches to identify families that are
in immediate need of assistance during the holidays.
