Assumes Mayor Pro Tem Role
By
Allison Jean Eaton
Bulletin Staff Writer
COMPTON – It
happens like clockwork every July: The City Council appoints a new
mayor pro tempore.
This year, 2nd District Councilwoman Lillie Dobson assumed the role
effective last Tuesday, July 1, when she was officially instated during
that evening’s council meeting.
The position rotates from council district to council district at the
beginning of each fiscal year.
As mayor pro tem, her duties include aiding the mayor in his absence
and standing by whenever the mayor cannot facilitate a meeting or chain
of command. Because the mayor is employed as a deputy district attorney,
he is often late or does not make it at all to meetings that start
at 3 p.m. due to being in court, which lets out at 4:30 p.m.
This makes the position all the more important, as it’s almost
guaranteed the mayor pro tem will have to facilitate at least the first
portion of council meetings every other week.
Dobson is handed the reins by Councilwoman Barbara Calhoun, who served
as mayor pro tem during fiscal year 2007-08.
“I thoroughly enjoyed it, but am so gracious to be passing it
along,” said
Calhoun.
Dobson said she “will try to do good” in the position.
“I’m going to do my very best to represent the people of
this city for the next year,” she said.
