For the fourth year in a row, a local block club has treated law enforcement officers to a tasty Thanksgiving-style meal to say “thank you” for the services they provide.

For several hours Saturday, Nov. 17, Sheriff’s deputies and Compton firefighters streamed in to the Youth Activities League as time permitted to sink their teeth into a tasty pre-holiday spread prepared by a hand full of ladies from the Poinsettia Avenue Block Club.

“We do this for them because they put their lives on the line for us,” said Brenda Postelle, who chaired the event. She said she launched the yearly feast when she chaired the club, which is now headed by Callie Parker.

On the menu was turkey, ham, chicken, cornbread dressing and gravy, home-made macaroni and cheese, green beans, candied yams, cranberry sauce, rolls and punch, all topped off with cake and pastries for dessert.

The event ran from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Postelle said they expected to feed roughly120 people. Some club members, including Postelle, had been up since 4:30 a.m. that morning preparing the meal, she said.

Organizations and individuals who contributed to the feast include Albertson’s, Ralphs, Bev’s Balloons, Annie Kelly of First United Methodist Church, The Salvation Army, Georgina Pickens, HoneyBaked Ham, Mr. and Mrs. William German from Optimal Child Development and D & A Bar-B-Q.
