Office Renamed for Fallen South L.A. Soldier
Waters, Villaraigosa, Burke among leaders who pay tribute

Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke and Marshall’s
parents.
Community
leaders, postal representatives and the community paid tribute Wednesday
to the U.S. Army Staff Sgt. John W. Marshall-killed in Iraq at the
age of 50-by renaming the Hancock Park Post Office in South Los Angeles
after the soldier.
The branch at 8200 S. Vermont Ave. was renamed after Marshall, who
was killed in an ambush in Baghdad on April 8, 2003. He was about
to retire, but chose to enlist one more time because he felt he had
a job to do in Iraq.
Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Los Angeles, introduced the bill to rename
the post office for Marshall, which was signed into law by President
Bush on July 12, 2005.
“
It’s about time more attention be paid to people in South Los
Angeles who are making the supreme sacrifice to protect all of us,” Waters
said during the afternoon ceremony, where a temporary banner with
the post office’s new name was unveiled. “I’m proud
to support this hero from my 35th District who made this sacrifice.
No matter what we think about the war, let it be known today that
we honor, respect and support our soldiers.”
About 200 people including Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, L.A. County
Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke and members of Marshall’s family
attended the ceremony.
“Mr. Joseph Marshall, you and your family must be proud of
your son and your brother while suffering the pain of loss, yet you
continue
to move on as a proud family,” Villaraigosa told the late soldier’s
father. “And this is really what this is about — a family
with a long line of servants sticking together. And by participating
in this ceremony to rename this post office today, we are standing
with you as part of a big family, a family who is proud of its country
and proud of its son from South Los Angeles.” A permanent sign
with the new name will be installed within two weeks, Los Angeles
Postmaster James A. Smith said.
