CareerLink
WorkSource Center’s budget will reflect an additional $5,820 from
the city of Compton for its operating expenses.
The center, 700 N. Bullis Rd., administers employment and training
programs.
“The CareerLink staff, under the auspices of the city of Compton,
manages the day-to-day operations and leases office space to interested
lessees on an annual basis,” said City Manager Barbara Kilroy in
a report presented to the city council at its December 20 meeting. “One
such tenant is Southland Business Development Partnership, which
leases office space at the CareerLink for $5,820 per year.”
That money must be reflected in the CareerLink budget.
CareerLink also administers the city’s Workforce Investment Act and
Department of Labor programs, which are funded by the federal government.
The city recently hired IdeaMax to help the center to obtain re-accreditation
that is required in March 2006.
IdeaMax will provide direction to WorkSource centers in achieving
and maintaining rating scores that will result in re-accreditation. The
company is one of the premier consultants on workforce systems and has
extensive experience both locally and nationally with program rules, regulations,
design and implementation. It is a leading organization for assisting Regional
Workforce Groups (RWG) agencies in completing re-certification applications.
“Government requirements are complicated and extensive,” said
City Manager Barbara Kilroy. “It’s pretty standard for cities
to engage a consultant to help steer through the accreditation and re-accreditation
process.”
CareerLink programs add $5 million to the local economy every year.
The revenue comes from wages and benefits earned by job seekers, reimbursement
from businesses for job training programs, fees paid to employers that
hire and place job candidates and on wages and benefits paid to its staff
members.
It is one of five RWGs in Los Angeles County. Together they represent
51 percent of the L.A. County service area. Compton CareerLink is one of
the largest. It operates from a 36,000-square-foot facility set on seven
acres. It serves a population of more than 150,000 residents from Compton,
Rancho Dominguez, Willowbrook, West Compton and Harbor Gateway.
The center works with local businesses to get input on the services
they need. Based on that input, it offers job candidate screening, job
matching and referrals, skills assessment, interview scheduling, customized
job training, on-the-job training, job analyses and descriptions and labor
marker information. Often these services are free if the job seeker is
eligible for federally funded programs. When fees are charged, they are
nominal.
It also provides search and placement assistance for job seekers
and information on support services that are available to them. It also
assists in filing for unemployment compensation.
