Charles
Davis Takes Helm of Chamber
By

The
longest serving city clerk in Compton history was June 14 appointed
head of the Chamber of Commerce.
Charles Davis has officially taken the reigns as executive director
and will be working alongside chamber board member Lorraine Cervantes,
who has for more than a year served as interim executive director, according
to Cervantes.
“He has a lot of connections with businesses and business people
because he was city clerk for all those years,” Cervantes said. She
explained that Davis, who recently retired, offered to take the position. “I
welcome him coming over.”
Born in Seattle, Davis moved to the Hub City in 1970. He was first
elected city clerk in 1973 and served in that position until the end of
2003.
“We’re really excited to get to work,” Davis said.
According to him, the chamber has been closed for the past five or
more months. “But I’m here now, and I’m going to try
and get it up and going.”
Davis said increasing membership, which is at about 100-150, is his
No. 1 priority. He said he’s already been meeting with city staff
to get the ball rolling on the business license department’s promoting
chamber membership when new businesses apply.
A new Website, www.comptonchamber.org, was tentatively set to be
up and running last weekend, according to Webmaster Dennis Aytekin. Davis
said the site will be a place where dues-paying members can link their
business and services Websites.
“The more immediate thing we’re doing is getting the Webpage
to be more user friendly,” he said.
Another project the new executive director has finalized is securing
the chamber’s very own TV show on the local cable station to showcase
local businesses. Davis said he will serve as the program’s host,
and the first taping is slated for the next couple of weeks. It will feature
the chamber’s president, Lestean M. Johnson, and a subsequent program
could feature Mayor Eric J. Perrodin, he said.
A mixer is tentatively set for the end of the month.
The mayor said at a council meeting last month he is “looking forward
to [Davis’] leadership in bringing the Chamber of Commerce back to
what it once was and where it should be.”
The chamber is located inside the Martin Luther King Jr. Transit
Center at 310 N. Willowbrook Ave. and can be reached at (310) 631-8611.
Davis is there 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
