CIF Southern Section Strips Dons of Home Playoff Games
Sanction the result of school’s failure to turn over this year’s basketball playoff game revenues in a timely manner

Because of delinquency in handing over its boys’ basketball ticket revenue for two home playoff games this year to CIF Southern Section officials, Compton Dominguez High has been stripped of all home boys’ and girls’ playoff games for all sports in the 2008-2009 school year.

A Dominguez official eventually provided the California Interscholastic Foundation’s Southern Section with the playoff game funds on May 23 – two days after the section’s executive committee voted to sanction the school, said CIF Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons.

Without saying how much money the Dominguez official turned it, Simmons said: “I’m not going to give you a dollar figure, but I will just simply say even if it’s two dollars, if you’re part of a member in an organization, there is a responsibility to pay the membership fees. That’s how we are able to operate.

“It’s incumbent for all members to pay those fees on time – no matter what the number is. And they just didn’t do that,” he said. “I’ve been here for 12 years and this is the first time we ever imposed a sanction.”

In handing down the judgment during their May 21 meeting, the Southern Section’s executive committee cited a section bylaw that reads: “Schools that continue to be delinquent with financial reports will not be allowed to host a home game during the playoffs in all sports for the period of one year.”

In response to the CIF Southern Section’s sanction, the Compton Unified School District has launched its own investigation into the matter, said Deputy Superintendent Robert Nero.

While refusing to disclose any details regarding the school district’s investigation, Nero did say: “An investigation is under way and it would not be appropriate to comment about the CIF’s concerns until the investigation is completed.

“It would be better to wait until after the investigation has concluded before the district makes any comments,” said Nero, adding that the investigation was launched approximately a month ago.

The deputy superintendent said it was unclear when the investigation will be concluded but did say: “However, once it (the investigation) is concluded, I am sure that – if the (school) district deems necessary – they will make a statement regarding their findings.”

Simmons said several notices were sent out to Dominguez High, adding that the school had other instances of making late payments.

According to CIF officials, schools are responsible for turning in all ticket sales at the gate for playoff games to the Southern Section, which then provides the participating schools a return check for percentages of the total money.

Neither Dominguez High’s athletic director, Russell Otis, nor its principal, Charles Watkins, could be reached for comments, following several calls to their respective offices, as well as Christine Sanchez, director of Communications for the Compton Unified School District.

Nevertheless, Simmons said Dominguez can appeal the executive committee’s decision by stating their case during the committee’s next meeting scheduled for Aug. 14.

“I certainly would think if they had a concern about the sanction, that they would make an appeal prior to playoffs in the fall,” he said.

The executive committee, Simmons said, is comprised of about 20 individuals that make up the administrative component of the CIF’s Southern Section Council.
