Gang Members Fire at Deputies With High-powered Assault Rifle
No one is hurt and an arrest is made following planned operation

COMPTON – More than 100 residents were evacuated from the Grandee Apartments last Tuesday night after gang members and deputies exchanged fire, law enforcement officials said.

No one was hurt in the incident, which took place at approximately 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29 at the apartment complex just off of Alondra Boulevard and Grandee Avenue south of the aiport, said Compton Station’s Lt. Joe Gooden.

The complex is notorious for its high level of gang activity.

The station had recently received calls from concerned residents that known gang members were walking around the complex with what appeared to be high-powered assault rifles, Gooden said.

Based on those calls, the Sheriff’s Department set up an operation that it was carrying out last Tuesday night when they were shot at, said Compton Station Capt. William Ryan.

“ It was a planned operation to go over there and follow up on those earlier calls,” he said.

As part of the operation, two deputies and a sergeant approached a group of about 25 loitering gang members, one of whom fired once at the deputies with what Compton Station’s Lt. Tony Lucia confirmed is an AK-47. The deputies returned several rounds as the gang members fled on foot, Ryan said.

The department immediately set up a containment area and evacuated residents, taking them by bus to Compton High School, where they remained until the following morning.

The gunman was arrested and nine others – both male and female – detained.

Ryan cited it as an example of how the community’s tips can assist the department in fighting crime here.

Violent crime is up compared to last year in part due to last month’s rash of gang-related murders. Between April 17 and April 30, six people were murdered, including a man in a wheelchair.

As of April 30, 13 murders had taken place within city limits and four in the county unincorporated areas patrolled by Compton Station. As of that time last year, there had been 11 in the city and three in the county.
