Christmas
Made Merrier For 10 Local Families
Ten Compton families
enjoyed an unforgettable Christmas this year thanks to Compton
Mayor Eric J. Perrodin, the Compton Fashion Center, the City of Compton
and
the Compton Sheriff’s Department.
Pre-selected from names provided by the Compton Drug Court and the
Compton Unified School District, the members of the Contreras, Taylor,
Berry, Wilson, Richards, Vargas, and four other families were shocked when
they received the call from the Mayor’s secretary, Karen Haywood,
informing them that they had been chosen to receive toys and gift certificates
to enable them to have a Christmas to remember.
“It came at a really wonderful time,” said Tracy Richards,
the mother of six and guardian of three children whose mother is currently
hospitalized
in the critical stages of cirrhosis of the liver. “This is a blessing.
Christmas would have been dreary,” she said.
Each family received a large box bursting with a variety of toys
such as the Sonic Control Crying Baby, Dolly Stroller, Electronic keyboard,
Monopoly, Tumbling Tough Wheels and the Friction Power Sport Vehicle, a
$100 gift certificate to shop at the Compton Fashion Center, a turkey courtesy
of the City of Compton and a ham with all the trimmings from the Compton
Sheriffs station.
“It’s quite a blessing. We really are very, very grateful,” said
Trudy Berry, mother of a 14, 10 and four year old. “I was wondering
how I was going to do it. We really appreciate this.”
Accompanying Trudy was her 77 year-old mother, Lois, who, along with
her 85 year-old husband, has lived in Compton for 50 years.
Vicki Taylor is rearing four children and was very appreciative for
the help. “I needed it. It’s going to help a lot.”
The giveaway was held with no fanfare in Mayor Perrodin’s office,
with the mayor offering words of support and encouragement to each family.
“Last year we were able to assist five families and this year we
were able to help 10 thanks to the generosity of the Compton Fashion Center,
the Compton Sheriffs, the city and the ministers from the Mayor-Minister’s
Quarterly Breakfast for enabling us to double the number of families
that we were able to help this year,” said Perrodin. “We look
forward to increasing the number next Christmas.”
