Art exhibit

California State University Dominguez Hills Art Gallery will present “Twentyone Artists Create Books” and “Student Showcase: Design” through April 3 in the Art Gallery, LaCorte Hall, 1000 E. Victoria St. in Carson. Among the featured artists are Terry Braunstein, Tini Miura, Pia Pezzo, Sue Ann Robinson from Long Beach and Todd Smith of Los Angeles. Black History Month activities at El Camino Compton Center:

nCompton native Gerald C. Rivers will portray Martin Luther King Jr. in “Martin & Music” with the accompaniment of Broadway vocalist Charles Holt at ECC Compton Center on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. in the student lounge. Rivers is a professional actor and motivational speaker.

n Dr. Ikaweba Bunting, ECC Compton Center political science professor and former resident of Tanzania, will speak on “The 1960s Struggle for Black Liberation and the Tanzanian Experience” on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 11 a.m. in the student lounge.

nECC Compton Center’s Dance Ensemble will present “The Journey: A Walk Through Time Featuring Dance Motifs of Past Eras” on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m. in the student lounge.

Monthly Block Club Commission Meetings

Block Club Commission meetings are held on the fourth Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Blue Room, 600 N. Alameda St. Meetings are open to the public. For inquiries, call 310-605-6331 or email tajautabclub@aol.com.

Dollarhide Senior Center, 1108 North Oleander Ave, offers a variety of activities including information and referral, Dial-A-Ride, Dial-A-Taxi, social clubs, enrichment classes, excursions, nutrition, Braille, employment and MTA Bus Passes. Free income tax service for seniors:

AARP is sponsoring a program that will provide free income tax services for seniors through April 10. The program will be offered each Tuesday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Dollarhide Senior Center. Appointment needed. Those interested should contact the staff at the center at 310-605-5688.

San Manuel Indian Casino excursion

The 50/50 Club will host a trip to San Manuel Indian Casino on Thursday, Feb. 23, departing from Curry Temple CME Church at 7 a.m. The cost of the trip is $21. “Great African American Women, Past and Present”

City Councilman Dr. Willie O. Jones will host a dramatic presentation celebrating the achievements of extraordinary women who shaped the spirit and substance of civil rights in America, just as their mothers and grandmothers had done for decades. The program will feature live entertainment, a catered lunch and seniors dressed in Dashikis, Kente, Agbada and mud cloth. The program is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 24. Parking will be available at Curry Temple Church and Dollarhide Senior Center. Program starts at 10 a.m. Lunch will be provided. Donation is $10 per person. Shuttle service from Curry Temple Church will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Compton initiative cleanup

The city of Compton has partnered with Justdogood.org to provide a series of cleanups in each City Council district. Seniors can have the exterior of their homes painted and trash removed from their property. To participate, obtain

a registration form for the next scheduled cleanup, sponsored by the Compton Initiative.

Dial-A-Ride

Dollarhide Dial-A-Ride transportation program hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No transportation is provided between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to accommodate lunch breaks for drivers.

Bingo class

A new class on bingo is offered every Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. in the multipurpose room. Bingo boards will be $1 per board per senior.

Art class

Art class meets weekly from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Art helps students exercise their brains and teaches organization and design. Students will learn to develop techniques like shading, blending, scumbling and more. Sign up at front desk.

Food distribution

The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank program will distribute a free food kit once a month.

Kits will be distributed on every third Wednesday of the month. The next distribution is set for Feb. 15, between 9 and 11 a.m. Proof of income, Social Security or pension is required.

Ceramics workshop

Ceramics classes are regularly scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. Classes are for beginners through advanced and cover all aspects of the crafts.

Taxi vouchers available now

Taxi vouchers are available for the cost of $10 per booklet. To purchase, you must be 55 or older and must have proof of Compton residency, such as a utility bill, a California driver’s license, identification card, Social Security card or medical card. If disabled, you must be between 18 and 54 years of age with a physician’s verification. For more information or to make an appointment, contact Pamela Coleman at 310-605-5694. The new location for the taxi voucher program is 600 North Alameda St., Room 12. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
